Make Your Own Halloween Chocolates!

With Halloween season upon us, you may, like me, be searching for personalised molds for chocolate sweets. I am not sure if I want to use chocolate molds with ready-made shapes like little pumpkins and witches on broomsticks, or if I want to have a go at a personalised mold kit using my own found-object shapes from around the house, so I am deciding to weigh the options.

First of all, there are a lot of great chocolate molds out there in the local stores, specialty shops, and especially online. I found a lot of great shapes, and some cute Halloween designs at Amazon.com, including these chocolate sucker molds.

This mold makes approximately 8 suckers per pound of chocolate. Suckers are about 1-inch by 3-inch by 1/2-inch in size, and each mold tray has 5 candy sucker slots. Note, the trays are not dishwasher safe, and are not for use with hard candy or other hot ingredients. They are made of FDA approved polypropylene plastic, for use with chocolate, candy coating, soap, butter, or cream cheese.

If you’re not into suckers, there are also these super cute assorted bite-size Halloween shapes featuring chocolate-black cats, ghosts and gravestones, or these smaller shapes in an efficiency 35-piece mold that will produce 160 pieces per pound of chocolate!

The other path to Halloween chocolate sweetness that really has me curiously thinking is to create my own personalised chocolate moulds from object shapes I have laying around the house like coins, jewelry, toys and trinkets. I don’t have anything real specific in mind so much as just the novelty of this idea speaks to me. :) It looks pretty easy and fun, and the cost of a mold making kit is a lot less than I expected. I think my kids and I could really have some fun with this.

All you do to create your own chocolate candy mold is shape the silicone putty mixture that comes in the kit around your object of sweet desire, let it set, and you are ready to begin pouring the melted chocolate! Sounds pretty easy to me! And, these moulds that you create are, unlike the ready-made shapes from Amazon, dishwasher and microwave safe so that you can easily use them over and over again.

So, what’s my verdict this Halloween season? Well, of course, I need to try both the ready-made shapes and the personalised kit! :) I like the ready-mades because they’re typically Halloweeny, unmistakable, can’t go wrong, guaranteed to give me Halloween shapes when the chocolate dries. But, for the extra kitchen fun with the kids (and to satisfy my curious creativity), we really need to try out the personalised mold kits.
